YOUTH LAUNCH HEALTHY NEIGHBORHOOD STORES NETWORK IN NORTH FAIR OAKS

WHAT: Youth advocates from the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) will hold an event to unveil their most recent store makeover and publicly launch the Healthy Neighborhood Stores Network, a youth-led collaborative effort between local merchants and multiple agencies, including project partner Kaiser Permanente. Youth advocates will release data findings from surveys that demonstrate community members in the low-income neighborhood of North Fair Oaks want more fresh produce available in their local corner stores. Youth will be joined by store owners, elected officials, and health experts taking a united stand to support the goals of the Healthy Neighborhood Stores Network. Youth will lead a walking tour through the neighborhood to meet the owners of three corner stores and highlight the changes made in each store makeover. Store makeovers are physical store conversions aimed at promoting fresh produce, decreasing alcohol and tobacco advertisements, and shifting community norms.
